Guides

Practical advice to help you get more from your referral programme.

How to ask for referrals without it feeling awkward

The biggest barrier to getting referrals isn't that people don't want to help — it's that they don't think of it unless prompted. The key is making the ask feel natural, not salesy.

Frame it around the other person, not yourself. Instead of “Can you refer someone to me?”, try “If you know anyone who's struggling with [problem you solve], I'd love to help them out.” This shifts the focus from you needing business to you offering value.

Make it easy. Don't ask them to remember — send them your WOM link right there and then. A text or WhatsApp message takes 10 seconds and removes all friction.

Mention the reward casually. Something like “There's a little thank-you in it for you too” is enough. You don't need to hard-sell the incentive — it's a bonus, not the reason.

When to ask

The best time to ask for a referral is immediately after a great experience — not days or weeks later. Right after you've finished a job, delivered a result, or had a positive interaction, your customer's satisfaction is at its peak.

That's the moment they're most likely to think of someone who needs the same thing. Send them your referral link before you leave site, before the call ends, or in a follow-up message that same day. Waiting even 48 hours drops the likelihood significantly.

How to set your reward levels

Your reward tiers should feel generous enough to motivate action, but sustainable for your business. Here are some practical guidelines:

Too low: Anything under £10 or a vague “discount on your next order” feels tokenistic. People won't go out of their way for something that doesn't feel like a real thank-you.

The sweet spot: £20–£50 in vouchers (Amazon, John Lewis, M&S) for your first tier works well. It's tangible, easy to fulfil, and universally appreciated. For higher tiers, consider something specific to your trade — a free service, a premium upgrade, or a higher-value gift card.

Think about your margins. If your average job is worth £500, a £25 reward is 5% of revenue — a bargain compared to the cost of acquiring that lead through advertising. Even a £50 reward is cheaper than most paid marketing channels.
